Representatives from the Gilroy Tennis Club are shown installing 10 custom cement benches Thursday at the Gilroy Tennis Center at Las Animas Veterans Park. The benches will be placed on the sides of the six courts that are there. Each bench is engraved with the donor family’s name – Ray & Lisa Blagof, Dr. McCormack Family, Lael McCormack & Family, Eileen Obata & Tony Bontempi, Mike & Karen Parks, Marco & Pat Renella, Ruge Family, Bob & Sandy Schuman of Network Financial Group, Mike & Debbie Waller and Paul & Chris Wheeler.
The Gilroy Tennis Club, formed in 1973 and incorporated in 2001, has 300 active members and has a history of donating money for court renovation at Las Animas Park, as well as Gilroy High School and South Valley Middle School. In 2005, the Gilroy Tennis Club gifted the City of Gilroy an entire court with lighting valued at $72,000. Marco Renella, one of the club’s directors, stated that “Gilroy fields about 40 competitive teams each year within the Northern California Section of the United States Tennis Association. We are competitive and we love the game. We also believe in giving back to the community that has supported our club and our sport.”
