Gilroy wrestling coach Armando Gonzalez promised the Mustangs would take their Tri-County Athletic League matches seriously.

The team was as good as the coach’s words Wednesday, opening its league season with a decisive 52-9 win over Palma at Salinas.

Even with most of the Gilroy wrestlers up one weight class, it made little difference as the Mustangs won 10 of 13 matches, including six pins.

As usual, Gilroy was strong in the lower weight classes as Nicolo Naranjo and Rudy Maldonado had pins.

Travis Sakamoto, Ethan Ogle, Hunter Collins and Jesse Rogers also won by fall. All the pinners with the exception of Sakamoto were wrestling a weight class up.

Rogers, who already has more wins than he did last year, won by fall despite wrestling an opponent who was 70 pounds heavier.

Only Sakamoto and Vincent Aboytes were at the weight they normally wrestle at, and JV Tim Caspary filled in at 145.

The Mustangs are back in action this weekend at the Doc Buchanan tournament at Clovis High.
