Cars and Movies Fill Downtown

Gilroy – Tonight is the sixth Wednesday in the Hot Rods and Cool Flics series, taking place in the downtown at Monterey and Fifth streets. The evening features dozens of classic cars, which start to arrive at 5pm, and a movie starting at dusk. This week’s film is “A Night at the Opera.” Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs and a bowl for free popcorn. “The Parent Trap will show Aug. 15, the final Wednesday night movie of the summer.

STAR Program Revives King Lear

San Juan Bautista – The 17 members of the Gavilan STAR program will perform “The Daughters of Lear,” their adaptation of Shakespeare’s “King Lear.” The actors, who have been practicing for four weeks through the community college’s summer theater camp, will perform Aug. 13 and 14 at 7:30pm in El Teatro Campesino, 705 Fourth St., in San Juan Bautista. Tickets are available at the theater box office at $12 per adult, $10 per student or senior and $5 per child.

Gavilan Continues Registration

Gilroy – Registration is open for fall classes at Gavilan College, with units priced at $20 and financial aid available. Students are encouraged to come into the school’s office, 5055 Santa Teresa Boulevard, or register online. The office is open during the following times:

Hikes at Rancho Canada del Oro

Gilroy – The Santa Clara County Open Space Authority’s Discovering Nature Summer Camp for Grandparents and Grandchildren began Monday and runs through Friday. The camp runs from 9am to noon at Rancho Canada del Oro Open Space Preserve. Each day will feature a short hike, arts and crafts, and a nature program.

In addition, every Saturday in August will feature a senior stroll in the park at Rancho Canada del Oro from 8 to 11am. Those who arrive at 8am will get an interpreter-led nature program in the oak meadow. However, seniors are welcome to arrive at any time between 8 and 11am with the understanding that there will be staff members present who would love to walk or chat with them, or just be there for company and safety while they stroll.

Saturday, Aug. 11 is a stargazing night. The evening starts about 7:45pm and goes until our visitors get tired.

Saturday, Aug. 25 there will be a dusk/night hike featuring a program about pioneers from the past. Enjoy a five- to seven-mile hike into the hills for a view of the surrounding countryside or city lights. Hikers should meets in the parking lot at 6:30pm. The hike takes about three hours. Families are welcome.

Car and Bike Show at MVC School

Watsonville – Fancy cars, trucks and motorcycles will gather at the second annual Car and Bike show at Monte Vista Christian School in Watsonville from 10am to 3pm Saturday.

Awards will be given for cars and bikes in 34 different categories.

The event will include radio DJs, a raffle, a family fun area, and jump tents for children. Food will be offered by the full concessions.

Admission is free for spectators. Vehicle registration is $20 for the first entry, and $10 each for additional entries. Vehicles are welcome starting at 9am, and no pre-registration is needed.

Proceeds from the show will benefit the Monte Vista football program.
