Signaling for help
Dear Red Phone:
Not wanting to run this subject into the ground, but the 10th and Church streets intersection needs to be taken care of. One thing needs to be brought out in this: There’s an apartment house on both sides of the intersection and it’s full of children. There’s a busy intersection there, 7-Eleven and a liquor store. It might be 13th on the list in terms of accidents, but there are many more children there and that makes it No. 1.
Red Phone:
Dear Kid Concern:
There is a traffic signal at that intersection, but that high-traffic area as you point out is in need of an upgrade to improve safety. Red Phone called up traffic engineer, Don Dey, who always picks up when your questions need answers. He says the city is in the design stage of installing a dedicated left turn signal for that intersection. The project is expected to be completed before July 2008.
Parking Streak
Dear Red Phone:
I was wondering about the white van/recreational vehicle that is always parked in the Chestnut Square area. The occupant and vehicle are there 24/7. I passed by there on my way to work and home everyday and yesterday he had his side door wide open and was sitting in his underwear because it was so hot! What a sight that was! How can this be? Is there something that can be done about this? Thank you Red Phone for looking into this.
Red Phone:
Dear Driving By:
Red Phone contacted the Gilroy police department to get the details on long-term parking on the city streets. The vehicle is allowed to be parked in the same place only two days out of every two weeks. This rule is designed to allow for 48 consecutive hours of parking for loading and unloading purposes. So, if the van isn’t moving, the driver is breaking the law. Red Phone also called the fashion police for you on this one, who said the driver should toss the synthetic fibers in the heat and try 100 percent cotton boxers, which keep you much cooler and are less offensive to passersby.
Growing ideas
Dear Red Phone:
Has anyone given any thought to putting the new arts center inside the Gilroy Gardens park? I think that’d be a beautiful place to have an arts center, but I don’t know if that’s premature thinking.
Red Phone:
Dear Artist’s Vision:
The city has indeed given thought to ways Gilroy Gardens might benefit the arts community, though no one to date has aired the idea of building an arts center there. An amphitheater and pavilion are obvious draws for the arts community, but the city may prove reluctant to give up on the dream of a downtown arts center. They have already made a hefty $3.9 million investment in the land, and many officials see it as a key to the revitalization of downtown. But one never knows. The gardens has its merits too, and Red Phone thinks you should express any and all ideas to those in charge. Be sure to speak up at the next council meeting on the topic, scheduled for Aug. 6.
