Buy A Book Raise Funds for Rebekah

Gilroy – In an effort to raise funds for Rebekah Children’s Services, the nonprofit has partnered with Yvonne Drew author of “Today I Was Adopted.” Their goal is to sell 1,000 books. Proceeds benefit Rebekah Children’s Services.

Gilroy Gardens Goes Wild

Gilroy – Guests can now experience some of California’s most interesting and exotic native wild animals at Summer Safari: Predators and Prey, at Gilroy Gardens. This limited time event is free with park admission, and features a variety of wild animals that are nature’s predators and prey. Guests are able to get up close to these wild animals and learn about each animal’s habitat, role in the food chain, and other animal characteristics. This live animal exhibit runs for five weeks, through Aug. 29, and features a black bear, mountain lion, lynx, deer, vulture, king snake and more. Event times are 11am to 6pm daily, with trainer talks at noon, 1:30, 3 and 4pm.

Coming in October is the Halloween Treasure Hunt, a new seasonal event designed for the entire family. In addition, Gilroy Gardens will continue their popular annual events including the 6th Annual Gran Fiesta de Gilroy Gardens, Camp Nights and Community Scarecrow Alley.

Comedians Hit Local Stage

Gilroy – Stand up comedian Manny Maldonado will be appearing in Gilroy at the Longhouse Restaurant, starting at 9pm, Thursday. Maldonado is currently on the Latin Kings of Comedy Tour with Paul Rodriguez. He has appeared on ABC’s Comics Unleashed. Joining Maldonado is Kevin Young, who has worked with Robin Williams, Bobby Slayton and Darren Carter.

Conservative Republicans Meet

Gilroy – Conservative Republicans and others are invited to attend the monthly meeting of the California Republican Assembly at 7pm Thursday, Aug. 2. Meet at the Church of the Valley, 13380 Depot St., San Martin. The objective of the local CRA chapter is to raise political sophistication and keep abreast of politics in the state and country. ‘Arsenic and Old Lace’ Auditions

Gilroy – South Valley Civic Theatre will conduct auditions for “Arsenic and Old Lace. The first is Thursday Aug. 2 and Friday Aug. 3. Check in at 6:30pm, auditions begin at 7pm. Check in time for Sunday Aug. 3 audition is 1:30pm with auditions beginning at 2pm. Call backs (if necessary) will be Monday, Aug. 6. Be prepared to read from the script or perform a monologue of choice.

Auditions will be held at the South Valley Civic Theatre Warehouse, behind Kelly Moore Paints, 8565 Monterey Road. Please arrive early to register.

The show will open Sept. 14 and run four weekends with performances Friday and Saturday evenings each week and matinees Sunday Sept. 23 and Sunday Oct. 7 in the Morgan Hill Community Playhouse.

‘Shake, Rattle & Roll’ Hits the Stage

Gilroy – The City of Gilroy Community Services Department presents John Bisceglie’s “Shake, Rattle & Roll,” the ultimate 1950s and ’60s musical reunion. The show featured more than 109 local youth and adults.

The show runs Aug. 3 through 17. Aug. 3, 4, 8, 9, 10, 11, 15, 16 and 17 at 7:30pm. Aug. 5 and 12 at 1 and 5pm.

Performances will be held at South Valley Middle School, 385 IOOF Ave.

All tickets are $12. Seating is reserved seating and reservations are recommended.
