Want to Conserve Water? There’s a Simple Solution – Become a Vegetarian

Dear Editor,

These days, everyone seems to be concerned about water conservation, so I’d like to offer an important water-saving tip: Eat less meat. It takes 2,500 gallons of water – about as much as a Bay Area family’s total weekly water usage – to produce one pound of beef.

For every quarter-pound beef patty you skip, you save enough water to shower daily for a month. Our dietary choices have huge impacts on water consumption.

Producing a day’s food for a meat-eater takes more than 4,000 gallons of water, but a pure vegetarian needs just 300 gallons. You can take shorter showers and stop watering your lawn, or you can have a much bigger impact by cutting back on meat.

Maybe Residents Should Listen to Councilman Gartman More Closely

Dear Editor,

I guess someone was right when they sent out the “Rubber Stamp” pamphlet.

All one needs to do is look at the very last sentence in your recent story headlined “More Managers Raises.”

Council member Paul Correa states, and I quote: “We’ll have to hear what’s going on from Jay, get some more answers and see what we should do.”

I ask now who’s running the city? Maybe we should listen to Councilman Craig Gartman a little closer.
