Gilroy – Buzzards, eagles and hawks have nothing on these guys.
Miniature radio controlled jets flying at more than 200 miles per hour, aerobatic helicopters that defy gravity and the odd flying car or stop sign will strut their flying stuff at a free Airshow in Morgan Hill today and Sunday.
The event is put together by a dedicated group of hobbyist who fly at the Santa Clara County Model Aircraft Skypark on Monterey Road just north of Cochrane Avenue.
They are promising five hours, each day, of shows such as “Snoopy Vs. The Red Baron” in which the characters will go head-to-head in an aerial battle. There will be everything from simple gliders large scale WWII warbirds to high speed jets and even chances for those interested to try their hand at flying themselves.
“It’s stuff you don’t see everyday,” club board member Chris Luvara said. “You can be more daring with the model airplanes because you’re not inside of them.”
The event is also a chance to see if the hobby is right for you, said Rich Luvara, a club member who passed the passion unto his son, Chris Luvara, at a young age. A good basic plane costs about $400 and they can go as high as $9,000.
A free shuttle will be offered from the overflow parking lot on Monterey Road. The club recommends that people bring hats and sunscreen because shade is sparse at the airfield and the weather is expected to be sunny.
