Gilroy – More than 129 Gavilan College students will be handed scholarships Friday to aid in furthering their education. The Gavilan College Scholarship Ceremony begins at 6pm today in the Student Center.

A total of $85,000 will be given out to Gavilan students transfers. Five new scholarship were added this year such as the Latino Family Fund De Gilroy and a Cosmetology award. Donors include the Gavilan College Educational Foundation, Gavilan College employee groups and more.

One of the most prestigious scholarships is the University of California, Santa Cruz Karl S. Pister Leadership Scholarship worth $20,000. This years award was granted to Liset Vargas a biology major who will start at UCSC in the fall. A $3,000 award from California State University, Monterey Bay was given to Cristina Lee an interpersonal communications major.

Other prestigious scholarships include the Hattie and Herry Nerling Gilroy Post 217 American Legion scholarship and the Garlic Festival award.

Gavilan students have access to three forms of financial assistance to help them pay for college: loans, need-based grants and scholarships.

“I wish more students at Gavilan would apply,” said Sandra Talavera, financial aid senior program specialist at Gavilan. “There tons of money out there. I don’t care if I have to work a little harder, there a lot of potential for scholarships and students don’t apply.”

Unlike loans, scholarships do not increase a student’s debt load after college.

The year’s program will be followed by a reception.
