Mustangs Pounded by Salinas, Can't Clinch Title

San Jose – Gilroy gave once-beaten Pioneer all it could handle before falling 8-7 Thursday in a Blossom Valley Athletic League match.

Trailing 7-2, GHS battled back as its players were able to win three-game matches until Pioneer (9-1) won the key No. 3 mixed doubles match to emerge victorious. It was the second time this season that Pioneer edged Gilroy 8-7.

Gilroy (6-4) did get sweeps from its boys and girls doubles team, as well as a win from No. 3 boys singles Jorge Fernandez, 15-8, 15-5.

In boys doubles, Bao Diep and Hein Nguyen won 15-4, 2-15, 15-9; Brian Hentschke and Will Ebert won 15-13, 15-10; and James Kwong and Rafael Quiroz won 15-13, 8-15, 15-0.

In girls doubles, Meiyi Liang and Cuiemei Ma won 15-10, 7-15, 15-8; Christine Camacho and Ariana Azevedo won 15-5, 15-5; and Tracy Pham and Stina Marshall won 15-13, 9-15, 17-16.

“We came back because of our balance,” GHS coach Wayne Scott said. “We gave them all they could handle.”

Gilroy’s next match is against undefeated Gunderson at 3:30pm April 16.

Golf

Aptos continued its solid season in beating Gilroy 198-222 at Seascape Golf Course

Jordan Miller and Jonathan Higgins shot 43 to pace the Mustangs. Dan Dockendorf followed at 44 with Tyler Park at 45 and Estevan Gonzalez at 47.

At the Atwater Invitational at Stevenson Ranch, Gilroy finished 12th in a field of 24 teams. Miller led the way with an 84, followed by Gonzalez at 88, Higgins at 89, Park at 91 and Dockendorf at 103.

The Mustangs are off until April 19 when they face San Benito at Ridgemark Golf and Country Club.

Gymnastics

Cupertino – Gilroy High’s Veronica Kelly was fourth on vault with 8.3, third on bars with 8.2 and fifth on floor with 8.35 in a triangular gymnastics meet Thursday with Cupertino and Los Altos.

The Mustangs’ Amber Minderler was sixth on floor with 8.0.
