Gilroy – Gilroy’s girls varsity volleyball team put up a valiant effort Wednesday, but facing unusual distractions and a formidable foe in visiting Note Dame, the team fell in three straight games 25-11, 25-20, 25-18.
GHS’s top two setters were held out of the match and an injury to Melissa Avila in the second game put Mustang players in an unusual position.
“Between all the chaos of the scorebook and a player getting injured and having to run things differently (with the roster),” Grogan said, “there was a lot of confusion and the girls showed me they’re capable of playing a very good volleyball game.”
Lindsey Foster led Gilroy with four kills while Caitlin Chisolm scooped 18 digs off the floor and also contributed seven service points, including one ace.
“We stepped it up, especially when our power (Avila) came out,” Chisolm said. “Given the situation, I think we played really well.”
Other players who were all over the court for GHS were Jasmine Perez (14 digs) and Loryn Ferreira (13 digs, 4 aces).
“The girls stayed with the game mentally,” Grogan said. “They were digging balls right and left.”
Katelin Faria stepped in as a setter for the match and impressed her coach and teammates, despite having no prior experience at the position.
“We had to make some adjustments. I personally think they did really well for the situation they were in,” Grogan said. “(Faria) did incredible. She did above and beyond the call of duty,”
Chisolm also applauded Faria’s play, and said the team could learn a valuable lesson for the future.
“We need to know that situations are gonna happen when you’re not in the normal flow of the game, and we just need to step it up and talk more.”
The team moved to 1-2 in TCAL play. The Mustangs’ next game will be Tuesday, Oct. 2 at North Salinas.
JV Note: The junior varsity team lost its two matches to Notre Dame 25-10, 25-14.
