Fest parking mess?

I’m wondering what the heck is going on with the Gilroy Garlic
Festival. What are they going to do for parking when the Loma
whatever housing development gets put in. They have millions of
cars out there all over those pastures and there’s no place else
for them to go. Thank you. Bye.

Red Phone:

The Red Phone contacted Jennifer Speno, 2005 Festival president.

She said they are aware of the issue and that it’s a problem that will have to be worked out in the coming years.

“We are aware of the development,” Speno said. “Those are areas we realize are going to be a challenge for the years to come. We have leased some land on the corner of Thomas (Road) and Santa Teresa (Boulevard). It’s close to the festival, but that also increases our transportation costs and all those things as well.”

Pup pollution

“Hi, I’m the impatient caller on the barking dog situation and I really appreciate your response. I apologize for my impatience. Thanks again and you’re doing a great job, Red Phone!”

Red Phone:

No apology necessary, good caller. The Red Phone was just poking some fun at your – not two – but three previous calls about the noisy dogs. It didn’t forget about you. Every now and then it just takes a little time for the Red Phone to touch base with the appropriate people for certain questions. Thanks for the call and it hopes you get that pesky pup situation taken care of.

Driving hazards

“Hi Red Phone. I’m calling to complain again about the motorcycles on Watsonville Road, Hecker Pass and Burchell Road on the weekends.

I don’t know why the CHP isn’t patrolling that. They’re passing on double yellow lines, they’re doubling the speed limit and the CHP should be able to send two cars out there to start apprehending some of these folks that are making these country roads very unsafe for a lot of other people. Thank you.”

Red Phone:

The Red Phone checked in with California Highway Patrol Officer Chris Armstrong, spokesman for Gilroy and Hollister, who stated that the CHP does indeed patrol those areas – but officers can’t be everywhere all the time.

Armstrong requests that if you see motorcycles racing in these areas, to call the CHP at 848-2324.

“What I would recommend is they … file a traffic complaint,” he said. Armstrong added that complaints require the CHP to document how many hours officers are in any particular area. And they will step up enforcement in the necessary areas.

Lawns in need

“What’s going on at Christmas Hill? They need to water the grass because it’s all dead. Thanks.”

Red Phone:

The Red Phone received two calls about this situation recently. Just in case you callers simply skimmed the front page today and missed the bottom photograph, turn back and take a peek.

The sprinklers at Christmas Hill Park have been off since before the Garlic Festival and the lack of water – and festival traffic – took a toll on the grass. Fortunately, the entire park was re-seeded Tuesday and the sprinklers checked and are now ready for some serious watering.
