The Gilroy Children’s Musical Theater seeks local youth ages 5 to 25 to audition for “Pop Legends Live!” written and directed by local director phenom John Bisceglie. Auditions take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Gilroy Center for the Arts, located at 7341 Monterey St. The variety show will be in the vein of hit TV singing shows such as “Glee,” “The Voice” and “American Idol”.
The cast will rehearse Thursdays at the Morgan Hill Community Center located at 17000 Monterey St. Morgan Hill, and perform for one day only on May 4 at the Palace of Fine Arts Theater in San Francisco for an audience of 3,000. Everyone who auditions for the show lands a role.
Bisceglie founded the Gilroy Children’s Musical Theater in 1991 and has created, directed and choreographed hundreds of community, commercial and professional productions featuring actors of all ages since 1985.
He was the artistic director for San Jose Parks and Recreation’s Young People’s Theater for nine years and has served Gilroy’s Community Services Department in a similar capacity for the past 21 years. He has directed and produced productions for Christopher Ranch, Hoey Ranch, The American Musical Theater of San Jose, Bella Mia Restaurant and the Victory Theater.
Bisceglie’s love of theater began quite unexpectedly. Growing up, he wanted to join the Future Farmers of America program, but his school enrolled him in a theater program instead. This happy accident uncovered his talent for performing. His skills include directing, dancing, costuming and advertising, as well as a knack for inspiring kids and adults to sing, dance and get involved.
In 2009, he directed and produced the “SF Follies” in San Francisco’s Union Square. The show received four Bay Area Critics Circle awards. Most recently, he directed and produced “Forever Broadway” at the Herbst Theater in San Francisco with a cast of 80 adults. As a professional actor, Bisceglie appeared in “Peter Pan” with Cathy Rigby and as Tony in “Tony ‘n’ Tina’s Wedding”. He also established the San Francisco Children’s Musical Theater, expanding his colorful and elaborate productions to young actors from all around the SF Bay Area.
