Gilroy – Calling all artists to the first ever Gilroy Art & Wine Festival.

The city’s Community Services Department and Visitor’s Bureau are sponsoring the first art and wine expo at Christmas Hill Park Saturday, Oct. 8 from 10am to 5pm.

Free to the public, visitors can purchase arts and crafts, have their fill of wine and food, and listen to music in between perusing local works of art.

Kids can create their own master pieces in the kids art corner.

But the highlight of the day will be the awards ceremony for local artists at the Christmas Hill Gazebo stage at 12:15 pm.

Best of Show and the Mayor’s Award choices will be awarded with a cash price to the work of arts judged to be a notch above the rest.

A small stipend and ribbons will go to first, second and third places in each category. Honorable mention will receive a ribbon in each category.

Artists 18 and older living in Gilroy, San Martin, Morgan Hill, Hollister and San Juan Bautista are invited to enter original artwork completed within the last two years.

Categories include watercolor, digital art, painting, photography, drawing, mixed media, three-dimensional art and printmaking.

Artists are invited to enter up to four pieces, with no more than two in each category.

Gilroy residents can enter framed pieces up to 36″ by 48″, dry and ready to hang with eye screws and wire on the back for $12.50 a piece. Other Gavilan district residents may enter artwork at $15 a piece.

Artists decide on a value for their work so it can be purchased at the festival.

If sold, 10 percent of the proceeds will go to the city to benefit community cultural activities.
