During the school board’s annual changing of the guard, trustees appointed a new president and vice president.
Trustee Francisco Dominguez, who’s making a run for California’s 28th Assembly District next year, will succeed outgoing president Javier Aguirre. The board also appointed trustee Denise Apuzzo as vice president.
If Dominguez is elected to the state Assembly, his duties would not begin until next December and would not interfere with his role as board president, he said.
One of the biggest challenges the board will face in the coming year is balancing the district’s budget in the face of an ever-widening budget gap. Dominguez said he hopes to incorporate the voices of many stakeholders into the budget discussions.
“I really do want people to come forward,” Dominguez said. “More than anything else, it’s about reaching out to people and having them be a part of our conversation.”
Superintendent Deborah Flores, who was ushered into Thursday night’s board meeting on crutches due to a torn Achilles tendon, left the meeting early to recover but welcomed Dominguez as the new president and gave Aguirre a plaque in appreciation for his year of service.
