Red Phone, Thank you for your great service to our community! I
was wondering, the west corner of 8th and Princevalle Streets has
little to no lighting, while the east side of the intersection has
two street lights. Any chance there might be some lighting planned
for that corner?

“Red Phone, Thank you for your great service to our community! I was wondering, the west corner of 8th and Princevalle Streets has little to no lighting, while the east side of the intersection has two street lights. Any chance there might be some lighting planned for that corner?”

Dear Left in the Dark,

It certainly can feel frustrating or even be unsafe to go by streets that are dimly lit.

“The only time the city comes in and puts new street lights is when there is a roadway construction that includes new street lights. One example would be 6th Street by Camino Arroyo bridge,” said Don Dey, city transportation engineer.

Dey went on to say there is no program set up to simply establish new street lights. He said it would take establishing a program for installing new street lights where they don’t exist and identifying funding.

“There are many areas where lack of street lights is an issue. So this is a citywide issue as opposed to any particular corner,” Dey said.

Lights need to be replaced

“I am just curious on how long does it take to replace the signal lights at the corner of Church and 10th streets. They have been working on them since the end of September. The sidewalk is torn up and there is mud, which makes it unsafe for people like me who walk. I have to go into the street when it’s raining. I just believe that it is unrealistic that it is taking this long; but, as with everything that the government does, it is taking forever for something to get done that should be done in about a month.”

Dear Tired of Waiting,

It seems as if this construction work has gone on for quite awhile and, perhaps, long enough already.

Red Phone again contacted Don Dey who said he spoke with the construction manager on this issue. The manager informed Dey the work is being finalized.

The workers are waiting for PG&E to set up the electrical meter that energizes the new traffic signals. Once that is completed, the old poles can be taken down and sidewalk repairs finished.

Dey said “whether permitting it should be finished by mid to late March.”

So, good caller, there you have it. This area of the road should be good to go soon.

You waited this long, a little longer won’t hurt. As they say, Rome wasn’t built in a day. So, hopefully, with the added time will come added quality as well.

Wrong TV guide has been running

“In case you haven’t already discovered it, the Dispatch is getting ripped off by the television guide supplier. The same television shows are listed in the new one that came out in this morning’s paper, they just changed the date. But it’s the same stuff inside. You’re getting ripped off. Thank you.”

Dear UnGuided,

Our apologies. We have run a correction and, in fact, our supplier did give us incorrect TV listings two weeks running. The problem has been rectified and your weekly listings should be right on from now on.

Today’s paper should be correct, but let Red Phone know if it is not.

But if you find yourself still not knowing what’s on TV, turn it off for a bit and go enjoy some time with your family or read a book – before literature was on TV or on the big screen, it was just the written word in hardbound books.
