Despite a disappointing 5-2 defeat at the hands of San Benito on Tuesday, the Gilroy girls varsity tennis team rebounded with a 7-0 sweep of visiting North Salinas on Thursday in TCAL action.

Tied a two matches apiece Tuesday against the Balers, things began to unravel for the Mustangs as the dropped next three matches.

“I saw an opening to finally beat (San Benito) but things took a turn for the worst,” coach Jami Reynolds wrote in an e-mail.

No. 2 singles player Alissa Castro picked up a point for the Mustangs winning her match 0-6,

6-1, 10-7.

Jennifer Kwong secured the other Mustang point winning in straight sets

6-2, 6-4.

The Mustangs recovered in convincing fashion Thursday.

No. 1 singles player Meha Munshi disposed of her opponent 6-1, 6-3, while Castro made it two-for-two this week with a quick, 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 Singles.

Lady Mustangs fall just short

A young Gilroy High girls golf team had its best outing Wednesday against Salinas, but couldn’t leave the course with a win.

Junior Megan Donahoe, senior co-captain, Laura Fellows and freshman Melissa Peterson all registered personal-low scores, coach Trudi Souza said.

The Mustangs take on Watsonville, a team they beat in a preseason tournament, Tuesday in Gilroy.
