COACHELLA, Calif. – Two of three local fighters out of San Martin’s Left2Right Boxing Club emerged victorious at the 8th Annual Desert Showdown World Amateur Boxing Championships held at 29 Spotlight Casino in Coachella, Calif. earlier this month.
Jesus and Jackie Gomez, each competing in the 106-pound novice divisions, won their bouts, while Elizabeth Rodriguez, 15, placed second in the amateur open division. Jesus, 10, and Jackie, 12, found themselves in a unique situation, as the brother and sister took on Victor and Maria Bonillas, respectively, in a collection of siblings squaring off for the novice division titles.
Rodriguez lost a close decision to Guadalupe Pinzon that could have gone either way, Left2Right trainer Jerry Rodriguez said.
“She went toe-to-toe with a girl and they brawled it out, bloody-brawled out,” he said.
Andrew Santiago, a 145-pounder out of Bad Intentions Boxing Club in Gilroy, also took part in the event, facing Angel Bojara in the 15-16-year-old division. Bojara won the fight in a split decision, Rodriguez said.
Left2Right Boxing Club and Jerry Rodriguez will be putting on the Third Annual Throwdown in Garlic Town on Aug. 8 at Wheeler Auditorium in Gilroy. The event will feature 15 amateur bouts and include raffle prizes. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for children and those 5 and under will be admitted free of charge. To find out more information about the event or to purchase tickets, contact Jerry Rodriguez at (408) 835-5451.
