At least two suspected gang members drove by and fired multiple shots at two young males who were walking along El Cerrito Way in north Gilroy this afternoon.

About 1:15 p.m., the assailants – for whom police had no description – drove up in a compact car and the passenger fired at the boys, who were on First Street near Safeway. The unknown victims immediately fled the area, jumping fences and darting through yards as residents called police, police said.

Police showed up moments later to find evidence of the shooting, including a bullet that struck a vehicle, police said. It did not appear as though the victims were struck by the bullets, and police had not located any bullet marks on the houses or apartments behind Safeway.

Police said the assailants used a handgun, and Sgt. Jim Gillio said the incident was gang-related due to the nature of the crime, the victims’ unspecified clothing and the fact that they ran away and did not report the crime to police.

“That’s very typical of the gang culture,” Gillio said. “This is definitely gang-related.”
