SALINAS – Back-to-back defeats earlier this week have Gilroy High’s boys tennis in the midst of an extended losing streak, but coach John Langer is stressing that often times more lessons to be learned from a loss than in victory; especially when a match is far from complete.

“We talk about being ready to play three sets if you lose the first one,” Langer said.

Mitch Souza and Andrew Costa can attest to that, as the No. 1 GHS doubles pairing lost its first set in Monday’s matches against visiting Monterey. Trailing 5-2 in the second set, Souza and Costa rebounded to capture the second set 7-5 before eventually winning a third-set tiebreaker 10-2.

“We had already lost (the team matchup) at that point, but they came back and we haven’t been doing that much,” Langer said.

Gilroy’s No. 3 doubles team of Kevin Lee and Joseph Leong scored the only other victory for the Mustangs on the day.

Traveling on Tuesday to take on a talented Salinas team, Gilroy again scored only two victories in seven matches but left its coach feeling good about the performance.

“I thought getting two points in that match would be about what we needed (to do),” Langer said. “Our doubles, as usual, was real strong.”

Souza and Costa again won a third-set tiebreaker, while No. 2 doubles Zach Singh and Jared Besson won in straight sets.
