Car hits bicyclist on Leavesley

Gilroy – A bicyclist was struck by a car and injured Tuesday evening, according to police.

The bicyclist was traveling northbound on Murray Avenue about 7:37pm. The bicyclist was beginning to cross Leavesley Road in the crosswalk when a car, which was also traveling northbound, attempted to make a right-hand turn onto Leavesley and struck the bicyclist.

The bicyclist suffered minor to moderate injuries and was transported to a San Jose trauma center for evaluation, police said.

The car’s driver suffered no injuries and was not arrested.

The names of the people involved were not available.

Arbitration ballot measure vote

Gilroy – City Council members will hold a special meeting at 6pm on Aug. 2, in City Hall, 7351 Rosanna St., to vote on placing a measure on the November ballot that would give voters veto power over binding arbitration decisions.

If approved, the measure would give councilmen the right to declare an arbitrator’s decisions detrimental to the city’s financial health and send the matter to voters for final approval. Councilmen are expected to approve a ballot measure that would apply to pending arbitration proceedings between City Hall and the local fire union.

Gilroy – South Valley Pregnancy Care Center, 7891-C Westwood Drive, helps women who are facing pregnancy through friendship and emotional support.

All of the services are free; pregnancy tests, pregnancy, abortion and post-abortion peer-counseling and information, and information and referrals to adoption and community agencies. Film festival seeking entries

Morgan Hill – Poppy Jasper Film Festival is accepting entries of short films in a variety of genres for the second Poppy Jasper Film Festival Nov. 11 to 13.

Submissions are taken only from California residents or students enrolled in California schools. Films must be no more than 30 minutes in length.

Categories to be judged include: drama, documentary, music, comedy and open.

The latter category is meant to encompass all avant-garde films or submissions that defy traditional classification.

The Morgan Hill Experience category will once again feature films that focus on the people, history or environment of the festival host city.

The submission deadline for all films is Aug. 1. Early entries are highly encouraged. There is a late deadline of Aug. 15 but with an additional fee.

Standard entry fee is $30 ($10 for students). Late submissions are $50 ($15 for students). Information on how to submit a film for consideration can be found at the festival Web site, www.poppyjasperfilmfest.org.

The inaugural PJFF, held last November, featured some 30 films, five workshops and 1,000 attendees.
