Friday’s girls soccer game between Christopher and Everett Alvarez was a long winded battle that ended in a victory for Alvarez, 2-0.
“My girls play with passion out there on the field and were fearless,” Alvarez Coach, Mario Delgado, said.
In the first five minutes of the game, Natalie Filippi made the first goal attempt for the Cougars that almost resulted in the first score, but was blocked by Alvarez’s Tatiana Hale.
Hale then assisted the ball to Lexandra Retamoza who attempted the goal for the Eagles, but was blocked by Erin Mank who recovered the ball for the Cougars. Mank then assisted the ball to Miranda Rehnborg who raced down the field with the ball so quickly that her shoe was left behind at the 50 yard line, and Alvarez’s Lorena Gonzalez stole the ball and made a goal attempt.
Her attempt, however, was blocked by Christopher’s Cata Martin who passed the ball to Filippi as she sped down the field finally feeding the ball to Jamie Boutte, whose goal attempt was blocked by Alvarez’s goalie, Victoria De La Cruz.
Fourteen minutes into the first half, Alvarez’s Yanilet Garcia and Erin Mank battled down the field for the ball and as Garcia fiercely kicked the ball towards the Cougar goal, it was blocked by Christopher goalie, Isabella Jimenez, who collided with Garcia to bring Garcia to her knees. Garcia didn’t plan to back down, as she recovered to make a goal at 27 minutes making the score 1-0.
During the second half of the game, there were two goal attempts each by Christopher Captains, Filippi and Martin that did not result in goals for the Cougars. “They worked very hard. We definitely missed out on some goal opportunities, but I am very impressed with my team,” said Coach Chip Beardsley.
In the end, it was Alvarez’s Garcia, who came back again to score another goal for the Eagles with 5 minutes left in the game, settling the score at 2-0.
“My team really worked as one tonight, I am very proud of them, especially Yanilet. She is a fierce team player,” Delgado said.
