The Hawks improved to 4-2 in Men’s DD Basketball League play Wednesday at Solorsano Gymnasium with a 42-41 win over Free Range Laphog.
Hans Mendezona made two free throws with 10 seconds to play to lift the Hawks past the Laphog. Nick Langone’s 3-pointer at the buzzer for the Laphog rimmed off the basket.
Mendezona worked inside to pace the winners with 14 points. Jesus Reyes added three key buckets in the final 12 minutes. The Hawks jumped to a nine-point lead before taking a 28-26 edge into intermission.
Matt Goshia connected on three 3-pointers and went 4-for-4 from the foul line to lead the Laphog scoring. Langone followed with nine points.
District 5 is 5-1 after a 60-49 victory over Recology.
Justin Nicholson was active in the paint and produced 25 points for the District. Tucker Baksa also worked inside for 15 points. Drew Pearson scored 10 of his 13 points in the second half as the District held on to a 35-15 halftime lead.
Donny Gooding keyed the Recology offense with 14 points. Romeo Travis scored eight second-half points for Recology (2-4).
Hard Ninety kept pace atop the league with District 5 by turning back the Spartans.
Josh Bleen was the most consistent shooter in the Hard Ninety lineup and finished with 17 points. Eric Smith turned four second-half 3-pointers into 12 points. Frank Tomasetti came up with 11 points, Mark Cisneros 10 for the winners. Thomas Doak put on a shooting exhibition for the Spartans and finished with 14 points.
