The Christopher High boys basketball team had little time to dwell on a difficult one-point loss to Seaside on Tuesday, as the Cougars were back on the court Wednesday against host Pajaro Valley. After a tightly contested first quarter, CHS went on a tear, outscoring the Grizzlies 29-7 in the second quarter en route to an 86-41 victory.
The 86 points in the team’s highest output of the season. The Cougars (7-14 overall, 3-6 Monterey Bay League) put up 85 in their first outing versus the Grizzlies (3-17 overall, 0-10 MBL.)
The second quarter surge was triggered by a full-court pressure defense, which led to an increase in fast-break points, CHS coach Scott Aldridge said. The Cougars led 47-33 at halftime. It was 18-16 CHS after the first quarter.
CHS continued to impress on offense in the second half, effectively utilizing its post players Takoda Bowers, Dillon Babb and Dillon Day. The trio combined for 46 points in the game.
“In the second half we did a nice job at running our offense, taking some time off the clock and making that extra pass to the open man,” Aldridge said. “Finishing with 86 points and scoring 73 the night before, it is nice to see our offense clicking on all cylinders.”
Bowers ended the night with 20 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks. Freshman Day continues to be a night-in-night-out impact and contributed 17 points and eight boards. Wyatt Rocheleau scored 13 points, Andrew Foster had 11 and Babb nine.
The Cougars finish out a busy three-game week at home at 7 p.m. Friday against North Monterey County.
