The Christopher High girls volleyball team completed the regular-season sweep of crosstown rival Gilroy High, claiming a victory in four sets (25-21, 25-17, 23-25, 25-20) on Thursday night.
The Cougars (8-1 Monterey Bay League Pacific Division) prevailed in three sets in the teams’ first match this season. The loss snaps a Mustangs (4-4 MBL Pacific Division) three-match winning streak. CHS has now won seven straight league matches and remains one-game up on Monterey for first place.
With the exception of the third set during the Sept. 25 showdown, no more than eight points decided each set between the two schools. Three were won by less than five points.
Christopher’s Hanna Tabron led all hitters with 17 kills. Gilroy’s Meghan Adams had 11 kills to carry her team.
CHS was sharp from the service line. Olivia Tabron had five aces, Michelle Toves had four and Christa Arroyo had three.
Cougars setter Alex Gerberick led all players in assists and digs with 30 and 13, respectively, while Gilroy’s Leilani Mah and Christopher’s Olivia Tabron each had four blocks for their teams.
TENNIS
Missing four varsity starters, head coach Patrick McBrearty had to shuffle his Christopher High tennis lineup against a young North Salinas team Thursday.
Tiffany Roberts had no trouble moving from No. 4-singles to No. 1-singles, winning her match 6-1, 6-2, but the Cougars were unable to pull out the victory, losing 4-3 to the Vikings.
The match came down to the result of the No. 4-singles match. Fittingly, it went to a third-set tiebreaker. And it was North Salinas’ Brittany Basiel earning the win over Malia Campos 6-3, 2-6 and 10-1.
Jade Bardrick (No. 3-singles) picked up a point for the Cougars with a 6-1, 6-4 win earlier in the day. The No.1-doubles pairing of Adena Chen and Nubia Juarez earned the third team point, cruising 6-1, 6-1.
FIELD HOCKEY
A goal by Sherelle Butler with two minutes remaining in the second half lifted Christopher High past visiting Carmel on Thursday, keeping the Cougars undefeated in Mission Trail Athletic League action.
CHS is 9-0 in league with three games remaining – including one against defending champion North Salinas.
• Gilroy High improved to 7-3-1 in the BVAL Mount Hamilton Division with its 6-1 nod over Los Altos on Thursday. Katrina Carter led the offensive charge with three goals. Lilybeth Mendoza had two goals and Monica Marrazzo chipped in one.
The victory sets up a big two-game stint next week against first-place Mitty and St. Francis. Both games are at home, starting with the Monarchs at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Lancers are in town for a night contest Thursday at 7 p.m.
