Volunteers help cart turkeys from Gilroy High School to St. Joseph's Family Center in Gilroy.

Now in its third year, the annual Turkey Challenge between Gilroy and Christopher High schools racked up a total of 275 frozen gobblers that were bequeathed to St. Joseph’s Family Center in Gilroy.

GHS won the drive this year with 146 turkeys, while CHS gathered a total of 129.

The effort was backed by the local philanthropic Gilroy Foundation, which threw in a $500 check for the “side dishes.”

CHS won the challenge in 2010, while GHS won in 2011.

“There is so much need in our community, and I’m glad we have made this a tradition,” said CHS Principal John Perales. “The real winners are our families in need.”
