The Christopher High softball team took another step forward in distancing itself from the rest of the Monterey Bay League on Tuesday, swinging past Seaside 13-3 to improve to 5-0 in league action.
The Cougars (10-2 overall, 5-0 MBL), who haven’t lost since March 3 – nine straight wins – pounded out 17 hits in the five-inning victory Tuesday.
The onslaught was led by Aly Olvera, who punctuated a 4-for-4 afternoon with a fence-clearing home run. Kayla Medrano, Kaslin Ettema, Kristen Dennis and Mackensie Holt each had two hits.
CHS will close the first half of league action April 12 at Watsonville.
• Kaylana Mah paced the Gilroy High softball offense with four hits in an 11-0 romp of visiting Everett Alvarez on Tuesday.
The win evened the Mustangs Tri-County Athletic League record at 2-2 and halted a brief two-game slide.
BASEBALL
Gavilan pitcher Chris Bradley was tagged with his first loss of the season as Chabot blanked the Rams 6-0 in Gilroy on Tuesday.
Cal Tashiro and Colby Lee had two hits for Gavilan (15-12 overall, 8-7 Coast Conference), which had eight hits as a team, though none translated into runs.
Chabot (15-9 overall, 8-4 conference) tallied once in the second, fourth and fifth innings, and used a three-run seventh to put the contest out of reach.
• Christopher High toppled Saratoga 7-1 in nonleague action Tuesday.
VOLLEYBALL
It wasn’t an actual marathon but it probably felt like it.
The Christopher High and Carmel High boys volleyball teams needed 2 hours, 25 minutes and four sets to decide a Tri-County Athletic League cross division matchup Tuesday in Gilroy.
No set was won by either team by more than two points, but the Cougars, after dropping Game 1, rallied to take the next three in an action-packed 23-25, 25-23, 26-24, 32-30 triumph at CHS.
“We are coming together,” head coach Karie Gonzales said. “Yet more to learn about team work, and more practices about sharpening our skills.”
Captain Justin Laveroni pounded home 31 kills, while fellow captain John Day had 11 kills. Phil Castro recorded a career-high 22 assists to go along with 15 from Emmanuel Salcedo’s 15. Libero Ryan Tabilias patrolled the bag line for 20 digs.
