Don’t use that lane

Gilroy – Contrary to appearances, the newly paved northbound lane of Santa Teresa Boulevard is not ready for traffic, according to the city’s chief traffic inspector Steve Beams.

The area is still under construction as part of a road-widening project on the city’s western artery, although motorists are turning down the cordoned-off area as they follow city vehicles and trucks down what seems to be a normal road.

“We want to remind people that it is still a construction zone and the public shouldn’t enter,” Beams said.

He said the traffic control along Santa Teresa, between Sunrise Drive and First Street, will remain in effect until the middle of October, when city officials expect to fully open all lanes.

Scholarship started in Imler’s name

Gilroy – A scholarship has been established in the name of former Luigi Aprea Elementary, Brownell Fundamental and Gilroy High School Principal Rich Imler, who died Aug. 25 of cancer.

Imler served in as an administrator in Gilroy Unified School District for 30 years, and was revered for his loyalty to staff and students.

“We wanted to do something that would be meaningful for him,” said Luigi Aprea teacher and friend Stephanie Chisolm.

An annual memorial scholarship will be given to a student who attended Luigi Aprea and graduates from GHS since he was a leader at both schools.

Donations for the scholarship should be in check format and made out to the Luigi Aprea Parent Club. Please make a note that it is to be used for the Rich Imler Scholarship Fund.

Checks can be either dropped off in person at Luigi Aprea or mailed to 9225 Calle del Rey, Gilroy, CA 95020.
