Next year, Gilroy will have 17 vacancies on various boards and
commissions
Gilroy – City Hall is calling on civic-minded residents to fill vacancies on nine boards and commissions.

Seventeen positions will become available in January on a range of city governing bodies, from the high-profile planning commission, which controls zoning and development in ever-expanding Gilroy, to lesser-known groups such as the Physically Challenged Board of Appeals.

City Clerk Rhonda Pellin said the “planning commission is the most popular because it’s kind of a lead-in for a council position.”

She said it has been tougher to find volunteers for the Arts and Culture and the Library commissions, as well as the Physically Challenged Board of Appeals.

The latter group ensures that playgrounds, sidewalks and other city property comply with the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

While the BOA positions are open to all residents, officials encourage applications from those with physical handicaps or with disabled relatives.

Candidates for the appeals board must disclose basic information about property holdings to avoid conflicts of interest.

The commissions, boards, and committees serve an advisory role to the City Council. Memberships on boards and commissions generally last two to four years.

Applicants must reside and be a registered voter within the corporate limits of the City of Gilroy.

Applications are available from the City Clerk’s Office in City Hall, 7351 Rosanna St. Filing deadline is Dec. 5, 2005 at 5pm.

City Council will interview candidates Dec. 12 at 6pm in City Hall.

Council will ratify the appointments at their Dec. 19 meeting.
