Restaurant disappears
“Hi, I’m calling because I’d like to know if you guys could do an article regarding Hawaii’z Island Grill. It was on Monterey Road. I’m just wondering what happened to it. We went one week, we were there and the following week it was gone. Just wondering if you guys can find that out. Thanks.”
Red Phone:
Thanks for the heads up, caller. The Red Phone passed your concern along to the City Editor, who decided it was worthy of an article. Check out Friday’s edition, page A5, or visit www.gilroydispatch.com.
Although Hawaii’z owner Clinton Kaleikini was unavailable, the building’s leasing agent was.
Agent John DeLong wouldn’t comment on the reason for the closure, but he did say that the building has already been leased to another restaurant, Tacos El Grullense.
Animal shelter concern
“Hey Red Phone. I can’t understand why the city and the county can’t get together on animal control services. Like if you have a pet and you’re moving, you can’t drop it off to get adopted at the San Martin Animal Shelter. How does Don Gage explain that? Thanks Red Phone.”
Red Phone:
According to Santa Clara County Supervisor Gage, the county used to provide animal control services for Gilroy but can longer afford to do so. Dogs that are collected by Gilroy are transferred to the San Martin Animal Shelter if they are not claimed after five days.
“Gilroy does their own thing,” Gage said. “They have their own animal control officer and so does Morgan Hill. We tried at one time to combine all that, but Gilroy and Morgan Hill want to do that themselves. We’re the county. We serve the unincorporated areas.”
Donate the land
“My friends and I agree with the person who called and suggested that Glen Loma should donate the property for a new school. After all, a new school in a new development is a great selling point for Glen Loma. Thank you.”
Red Phone:
Thanks for the comment. The Red Phone always appreciates hearing what its readers agree with – and what they don’t.
Nice changes
“Hello. I’m calling because I know people call in and ask questions a lot and some call and simply complain. But I wanted to offer a compliment to the Dispatch. I’ve noticed recently there have been some little changes here and there. I remember reading about the changes in the column a few weeks back, and have seen them and I approve. One thing I really like is that you guys seem to be using more maps and little charts and stuff. But one thing, well I said I wouldn’t complain, but I’m going to. One thing that bothers me sometimes is that some of the maps are too small to read. Especially for older folks. But that’s it. I really like what the paper has become. It gets better all the time. Thank you, Dispatch.”
Red Phone:
Wow, thanks for noticing the changes the Dispatch staff has recently implemented, including the front page teasers, the banner, headline fonts and pull quote styles.
Where maps and charts are concerned, every now and then space is an issue and they have to be decreased in size. When that happens, fonts are changed and adjusted on the map so that they are more readable at the smaller size. The Red Phone will pass along your concern and the staff will keep it in mind.
