Strollin’ Around
Saturday is one of those huuuuge days in Gilroy.
At 9 a.m. they will cut a ribbon opening the Paseo walkway between Fifth and Sixth Streets, a chance to see something that will be part of Gilroy’s history for years to come and shows off the history of the city. From 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. is the Art and Wine Stroll, where you can walk around downtown sipping the finest wines and seeing great art. It’s a great community event, a place to see and be seen and sip till you drop.
Golf Raises Needed Funds
Gilroy’s Parks and Rec department has a great program for children and adults with developmental disabilities in Gilroy, Morgan Hill, San Martin, Hollister and San Juan Bautista. These programs comprise of specialty classes—such as bowling, fitness, team walking, games, crafts and Friday social activities—as well as camping, community events, dances, theater productions, and out-of-town excursions including the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and Monterey Bay Aquarium.
Up until recently, to get there, they had to use city-owned vans public transportation or walk. Trips that were further away limited participants that required a wheelchair. After several years of successful fundraising efforts, approximately $104,500 was raised to purchase two new, wheelchair-accessible, 10-passenger vans. Most of these funds used to purchase the vans were raised from the annual Special Friends Golf Tournament at Gilroy Golf Course.
The tournament is being held Friday, June 2 at 2 p.m. Golfers and sponsors will enjoy playing a 9-hole course, lunch, and a delicious barbeque dinner. Funds that are raised will continue the efforts to provide programing opportunities to Gilroy’s special needs community. If you are interested in playing at this year’s Special Friends Golf Tournament, you can register online http://www.cityofgilroy.org/541/Special-Events or call the Gilroy Recreation Department at (408) 846-0460.
