Free practice for the SAT

Gilroy – Princeton Review will provide free practice testing and a strategy session for high school students at the Gilroy Library (7387 Rosanna St.). Students must sign up at the library by Jan. 20. Test is 10am to 2pm Feb. 3 and results and strategy session is 10am to 2pm Feb. 10.

Festival taking poster entries

Gilroy – The Gilroy Garlic Festival Association, Inc. is accepting entries for the 2007 Art Poster Contest. A $750 first prize will go to the entry which is judged to best capture the spirit and essence of this premier food festival.

In addition, the first place winner shall receive ten posters and one of each souvenir item produced with their artwork. The second place winner will receive $400 and third place $200. The winning entry will be reproduced as a high quality, limited edition poster to be sold at the 29th Annual Gilroy Garlic Festival, July 27, 28 and 29, 2007.

The deadline for entries is 5pm, March 1, and winners will be notified by March 30, 2007.

Coyote Creek bird walk

Morgan Hill – A series of bird walks led by Jane Haley, a National Park Service docent for 20 years and Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center (W.E.R.C) volunteer, starts Jan. 6, from 9 to 11am along Coyote Creek, north of Morgan Hill.

Bird walks will also be held Feb. 3rd, March 3 and March 31. Participants will have an opportunity to observe migratory birds as well as discover an appreciation of local birds, their habitat and ecological importance. Due to the terrain, these walks are not recommended for young children. The programs are free, space is limited and reservations are required.

Purring, barking in the new year

Morgan Hill – The Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter (FOSMAS) need your help to find loving families for the many homeless companion animals currently at the shelter and in foster homes.

Visit the FOSMAS pet fair Jan. 6 and 7, noon to 5pm at Petco-Morgan Hill (corner of Tennant and Monterey) they’ll feature many wonderful companions, including cats, dogs, and rabbits.
