Gun shop robbery suspect arrested

Morgan Hill – DNA helped Morgan Hill police officers identify and arrest a suspect in the burglary of a gun shop, according to MHPD Cmdr. Joe Sampson.

Officers arrested Peter Russenoff, 19, of Morgan Hill, on the DeAnza College campus Tuesday, Sampson said.

Russenoff is a suspect in the April 15 robbery of Gunworks, Inc., located on W. Second Street at Del Monte Avenue. Officers responded in the early morning hours that day to a report from the business next door that someone was moving around in the store, possibly in the attic.

Sampson said there is likely at least one other person involved in the burglary, perhaps acting as lookout. The suspects were gone when police arrived, leaving behind a beanie and a backpack containing 29 guns.

“(Russenoff’s) DNA matched some of the items that were found inside the building that he said he hadn’t been in,” Sampson said.

Detectives said they hope Russenoff can give them information about who else was involved in the burglary, he added.

Sinunu takes leave to focus on race

Gilroy – Chief Assistant District Attorney Karyn Sinunu is leaving the DA’s office Monday to campaign full-time for the top seat in Santa Clara County.

Sinunu announced Thursday she is taking a leave of absence from the department to prepare for the Nov. 7 election where she is up against Superior Court Judge Dolores Carr. She will return to the District Attorney’s office following the election.

“I am encouraged by the fact that 58 percent of Santa Clara County voters chose a prosecutor to be their next DA in the June primary. In order to run the best possible campaign, I need to be a full-time candidate,” Sinunu said.

She is DA George Kennedy’s top assistant and enters the election with his backing. Carr was the only candidate running for DA outside the department and gathered the most votes of all four candidates. For more information visit on Sinunu www.sinunu4da.com.
