Appalled, disgusted and shocked
“I am a Gilroy High School employee, who everyday reads the bulletin and reads the long list of names for early release to sporting events, and I just wanted to make a point here that one of my students has not been in class Tuesday or Thursday to my fifth period class because she’s an athlete and they had two games this week. Therefore, out of the five hours of instruction a week I have to give to this child, she has missed four.”
“I am shocked and disgusted at Gilroy High School. That is unbelievable, are they going to do this to colorguard, to football teams, to any of our other high school teams also? I mean a lot of kids go to college on scholarships from cheerleading. I have a child that graduated 2005 and I have child currently there, and if I had another option I definitely would. The only option is moving out of Gilroy and that’s what I think a lot of people should start considering. Instead of moving in, moving out because Gilroy just obviously has nothing to offer for our children.”
“I’m not the parent of a Gilroy High School cheerleader, but I would like to make the comment that I am very disappointed in the recent school board decision to not let the students compete at the Pro Bowl. And I have two additional questions: How many days is the Gilroy Choir missing for their trip to Japan and is there a process to impeach the board since they do not represent the opinion of the community?”
Red Phone:
Good callers, Red Phone hears your concerns loud and clear, literally. So what’s the next step then?
In response to the question about the choir missing school for their trip to Japan, Red Phone called Gilroy High Choir Director Phil Robb. He said the choir would miss the two days previous to spring break, which starts on a Friday, so the choir is requesting the Wednesday and Thursday prior. The request has gone to principal, who then approves or denies. Robb said the principal has approved the request, which he next sends it to the district office. If approved by district officials, the request goes to school board as part of an agenda item for consent. Therefore, the choir’s request hasn’t been completely approved, actually it is in the same place the cheerleaders’ request was just before it was denied.
And if you’re feeling frisky and want to petition to recall the schoolboard, call the county registrars office, 282-3008 to get started.
board made the right decision
“I would like to comment on the problem they are having with the cheerleading, that they are not allowed to go to Hawaii. Well if the school principal and the superintendent made that decision, I think there is a reason, because a lot of kids do miss school. Three days of missing school is a lot. I think these girls should understand certain decisions are made for certain reasons. What’s more important than education?”
“I am calling about the article in the paper about the cheerleaders and the Hawaii trip. I think the board is doing a wonderful job. They know what they’re doing and these girls have to understand that education is very important, if you don’t have an education then you cannot get a good job in the future and they must understand because the board made a good decision.”
Red Phone:
Callers, I’m sure the board appreciates your support. Looks like you and the board members are on the same page of the textbook. An education is important and that’s something you can’t get unless you’re in a classroom: Right?
