A Monterey Road on-ramp entrance to southbound Highway 101 closed for more than five hours Tuesday after a semi-truck turned on its side around, according to emergency officials.

The driver of the semi, Hollister resident John Brian Dawson, walked away uninjured, and no other vehicles were involved. Dawson’s 18-wheeler was carrying cardboard, but no hazardous materials, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The truck may have blown a tire causing the semi to careen off the road and turn on its side as it made its way onto the on-ramp, said Engineer Randy Decker of the Gilroy Fire Department.

Oil from the truck has spilled onto the roadway, and crews worked into the night to clean up the spill. At 8:15 p.m., workers were seen collecting cardboard and other debris that spilled onto the on-ramp.

Authorities from GFD, Gilroy Police Department, Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department and CHP arrived to the scene of the accident, and their vehicles will continue to block the Highway 101 on-ramp until the semi is cleared.

A left-hand turn lane on northbound Monterey Road at the accident scene is open for freeway-bound traffic. Drivers also can use Santa Teresa Boulevard to Castro Valley Road and enter the highway there.

Check back for more details as they become available.
