Single Christians take a whale watching trip

Gilroy – Hang out with other South Valley single Christians on a whale watching excursion, followed by dinner on the wharf Saturday. Meet at 10:45am in the parking lot of South Valley Community Church, 8095 Kelton Drive, (near First Street and Santa Teresa Boulevard across from the AAA building).

The bus leaves the parking lot at 11am. The boat will depart at 1pm from the Monterey Wharf returning about 4pm. Wear warm layers and bring lunch, camera, binoculars, dramamine, and sunglasses. Each participant will cover their own $32 fee for whale watching, and about $15 to $50 for dinner. No children younger than 5 years old.

Event teaches how to get cash for college

Gilroy – South County Cal-SOAP and Gavilan Community College invite seniors and their parents to attend the Cash for College Event. Families will have the opportunity to have all their questions answered in regards to the financial aid process, including grants, loans, work-study and scholarships.

All events are held from 6 to 8pm: today at Sobrato High School, at Anzar High School Feb. 27 and at Gilroy High School Feb. 28.

Deadline nears for 29th annual queen pageant

Gilroy – The Gilroy Garlic Festival Association is seeking contestants for the 29th Annual Miss Gilroy Garlic Festival Queen Pageant. Applications are available at the Garlic Festival office, 7473 Monterey St.

Miss Gilroy Garlic Festival Queen Pageant is a scholarship pageant. Contestants are judged on personal interview, speech, talent and evening gown. In addition to the selection of Miss Gilroy Garlic Festival Queen, scholarships will be awarded to many pageant contestants.

Applicants must be a resident of Gilroy, San Martin, Morgan Hill, Hollister, San Juan Bautista, or Aromas; a single female who has never been married and has no children; a high school graduate by June 2007; and between the ages of 18 to 24 by July 2007.

Deadline is 4:30pm, Friday. The pageant is scheduled for Saturday, March 31, beginning at 6pm at the Gavilan College Theater.

Knights celebrate with crab feed and dance

Gilroy – Residents can feast on crab, dance with a loved one to celebrate Valentine’s Day, and support a good cause Saturday, during an event sponsored by the Gilroy Knights of Columbus Council 2469.

The event at St. Mary Parish Hall, at First and Church streets, begins with a happy hour at 6pm, followed by the feed.

Improve language skills while studying in Spain

Gilroy – Learn or improve your Spanish language skills while you study and travel this summer through the Gavilan College summer program in Sevilla. Students will earn up to five units of university-transferable college credit while living with a host family in Sevilla, Spain. The trip runs from June 3 through 30, and costs about $1,500 plus airfare. A meeting will be held at 9:30am, Feb. 24 in the Humanities building, Room 105, on the main campus at 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., to provide students an opportunity to learn more about the program.

Elks lodge fashion show helps disabled children

Gilroy – Elks Lodge #1567 Fashion Show, “Springtime in the Rose Garden,” March 10, features fashions and accessories from local business and begins with no-host cocktails at 11am, luncheon at noon and fashion show from 1 to 2:30pm.

All proceeds benefit efforts to help disabled children. Tickets are available at the lodge, 2765 Hecker Pass Highway Monday through Friday, 9am to 1pm.
