My name is Lee Kalpin, and I was born in Gilroy in 1946. My parents subscribed to the Dispatch as far back as I can remember, and I have been a constant subscriber for at least 55 years.
In fact, in the early 1950s I very much wanted to be a route carrier, but the neighbor boy had the route and would not give it up. Fast forward to the late 1980s and my daughter had the route in Mesa Ranch. I would often sub for her, so I was able to fulfill my boyhood desire.
Yesterday my wife and I returned from a trip to Europe, and I read with interest your editorial dated April 11 (“Community journalism plays a vital role”).
With all the utter chaos coming out of the Trump Administration these days, your editorial provided a beacon in the dark and an expression of what this country is supposed to be. You gave me a sense of pride revolving around the community I consider home and perhaps a sense of hope as well. God Bless You!
Please continue doing what you are doing because we very much need a strong voice in our community and a partner in advocating for what is right in maintaining our democracy.
My wife and I attend protests in Morgan Hill on Fridays and in Gilroy on Saturdays and will continue to do so as long as there is a need.
Thanks again for your support of our community and nation. I appreciate you!
Lee Kalpin
