GILROY – Despite losses at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles spots, the Gilroy High girls tennis team rallied behind strong play from No.4 singles player Satthea Khay to squeak out a 4-3 win over Tri-County Athletic League opponent Alvarez on Tuesday afternoon.
Head coach Jami Reynolds said the Mustangs (2-0) familiarity with playing in extreme heat helped them outlast their opponents.
“It was hot, but we are used to it and I think we were better prepared for it,” Reynolds said. “We went through something like 80 pounds of ice.”
Khay locked up a hard-earned point and the Mustangs’ victory with a 6-4, 0-6, 10-8 triumph over the Eagles’ Tiffany Huynh.
“She turned it on,” Reynolds said. “She made less errors as the match went on.”
The Mustangs received a second singles point courtesy of No. 3 singles player Jennifer Kwong who handily disposed of her challenger 6-1, 6-1.
Gilroy’s No. 1 singles player Meha Munshi, lost in straight sets to Nia Cosad 4-6, 5-7.
The team’s No.2 singles player Alissa Castro battled from a set down to force a tiebreaker but could not finish the comeback attempt losing 3-6, 6-4, 12-10.
“Those were two very close matches that we should’ve had,” Reynolds said. “It definitely made it more interesting.”
The Mustangs took two of three doubles matches in the winning effort.
The top doubles pair of Melanie Morelos and Elaina Vasquez beat Jessica Vo and Camille Herrera 6-2, 6-2.
Gilroy’s No.3 three doubles tandem of Ashley Nguyen and Sami Holder buckled down for a 2-6, 6-1, 10-5 win. It was the duos’ second come-from-behind victory of the season.
