Lady Rams hang tough vs. Chabot
GILROY – Despite an opening 4-2 home loss to Chabot College on Tuesday, the Gavilan College women’s soccer team is already performing a lot better this season.
“We played extremely well,” said first-year head coach Marty Behler, who inherited a program that suffered blowout after blowout the last two seasons. “I’m very proud of the girls.”
The Lady Rams’ two goals came in the first half – one via freshman standout Cynthia Pinto.
Gavilan held Chabot to two goals in the first half as the teams went into the half tied at 2-2.
Coming back from the half, the Lady Rams gave up an early goal to give Chabot a one-goal lead.
Lady Rams’ sweeper Sonya Ornelas was injured when she was kneed in the back while going for a kick midway into the second half and had to be taken to the hospital. After being examed, she was given the OK to come home.
“My back is feeling better,” Omelas said. “I’ve never been injured like that before.”
After the loss of their sweeper, Gavilan gave up one more goal to Chabot. Even though they took the loss, Coach Behler considers the hard-fought defeat a moral victory for her troops.
“It’s a huge difference in Gavilan than in the past,” Behler said. “We’ve definitely made a statement. I’m very pleased.”
The Lady Rams will host Fresno City on Thursday at 3 p.m. and remain home against Evergreen on Sept. 16 and Ohlone on Sept. 18 at 4 p.m.
