Always on duty

“Hi, I just passed a CHP officer on Church Street who had pulled over a taxi cab. I’m wondering what a CHP officer, and I see a lot of them on city streets, why are they patrolling city streets? Why aren’t they out there on the highways and Hecker Pass, where there are lots of illegal trucks and speeding motorcycles? Thank you.”

Red Phone:

According to California Highway Patrol officer Chris Armstrong, just because police have certain beats they patrol, doesn’t mean they ignore it when a violation occurs in their presence outside of their beat.

“The CHP has jurisdiction on all roads – within city limits and out in the county,” he said. “So if we observe a violation in city limits, we can pull them over.”

Can we or can’t we?

“OK, I called last week about the cones on Monterey between 10th Street and Luchessa Avenue. They were removed Saturday morning, but there’s a permanent sign there prohibiting a U-turn. The answer last week from Bill Headley said they were to be removed by the construction company. I still don’t understand why a construction company would need to prevent people from making that U-turn. Please explain.”

Red Phone:

According to Bill Headley it is just an oversight by the contractors.

“If the sign remains up it should be covered,” Headley said. He thanks you, caller, for the heads up and he will be contacting the contractors. Though he did ask if it was a U-turn or no left turn sign.

“I guess either way it’s elementary,” he said.

Kudos, crew!

“I’d like to leave a message about the crew who takes care of Christmas Hill Park. They do a fantastic job. The place looks great this morning, right after the graduation they had there yesterday. Thank you.”

Red Phone:

It’s glad to hear the compliment and hopes somehow the crew members hear about it. Thanks for the call.
