GILROY – Live Oak proved to be five shots better than Gilroy High’s girls golf team Tuesday, winning 234-229 at Gilroy Golf Course.
The Acorns’ Paige Flores had the best round of the day, and of her high school career, shooting a 47 to edge Gilroy’s No. 1, Katie Kishimura, by seven strokes.
“We saw a couple good shots,” said Live Oak coach Mike Rubino. “Katie and Paige both had good approach shots on (hole) No. 1 for 5’s.”
“That’s a tough shot because you have to fly it in there.”
With both teams consisting mainly of players new to the game, the round was an even match, said GHS coach Eric Kuwada.
“That’s the nice thing about the [Tri-County Athletic League], most of them are beginners,” he said.
With the win, Live Oak improved to 1-1 on the season. Gilroy dropped to 1-3.
Megan Donahoe had the best round of all Mustangs with a 52. Her performance was one of several that was far better than a year ago.
“Megan’s got a good swing,” Kuwada said. “They’ve all dramatically improved from last season. Most of them are 10-15 strokes better than last season.”
Gilroy and Live Oak’s next round will be Monday in TCAL play.
