Dear Editor,

A new low may have been achieved by the Dispatch via the recent paid advertisement asking whether “Librarians lie.”

Replete with cartoon figure and – not really ironically – lies, one wonders what the Dispatch won’t print when paid. A quick look at the Web sites listed at the bottom of this unintentionally funny ad yields claims that refute the ad itself, while another redirects you to a Libertarian Party Web site.

So, Dispatch editor, or advertising director, some honesty:

n The libraries WILL close if measures A and B don’t pass (the confusion for some is the amount of hours the library will close – they won’t close completely, but substantially more than now).

n The Santa Clara County Library is and has been the top library system of its size in the nation for four years in row.

n A high percentage of funds from the measures will be for salaries; people, alas, are what keep the library open. The library is a service organization, not a profit center… and so on. A friendly suggestion for those who are confounded by the Santa Clara County libraries: move to Salinas.
