The following organizations and individuals deserve either CHEERS or JEERS this week:
CHEERS: For the hiring of James Maxwell as Gilroy High School principal. All early signs point to success. He has leadership experience and training, and his ability to articulate ideas and communicate direction are very solid.
JEERS: For San Benito County supervisors who are whining about the design of the new – and long-awaited – flyover at the Don Pacheco Y at the intersection of Highways 152 and 156. “Oh no, more traffic for San Benito County,” they complain. Well, what about more safety for those headed toward San Juan and Hollister? And wasn’t it a regional effort to secure the money for the flyover and move it up on the timeline? Being spoilsports at this point exhibits truly bad form.
CHEERS: For the news that re-built Eliot School will be ready for teachers and students in a few weeks. A delay would have presented serious educational difficulties for not only Eliot students but those at Solarsano Middle School, where a new group of sixth graders will join the existing seventh- and eighth-grade classes. (By the way, the new two-story school on the east side is beautiful, exhibiting a California Mission style and grace.)
JEERS: For the Santa Clara County Planning Commission which again put off renovation plans for the Solis Winery. No applicant should be forced through a four-year, $250,000 process because the county can’t get its act together. No doubt there will be more to come on this travesty.
CHEERS: For Gilroyan Chad Kagy who has overcome serious injuries to once again be a rising star on the BMX bike riding circuit. His second-place finish in an X Games vert ramp event Thursday night – televised live on ESPN – showed he’s back in top form and ready to challenge the best in the sport.
CHEERS: For the opening of the latest John Bisceglie-produced extravaganza, “Totally Rockin’ Temple of Boom,” at Christopher Ranch. The set and costumes are amazing and 45 young actors from the area stage a fun show filled with song and dance. For tickets and details: 607-4849.
CHEERS: For Gilroy firefighters who quickly quelled a hillside fire Monday near Welburn Avenue that could roared into a real disaster. Quick, precise action averted a potentially tragic story.
