After losing its first game, the Gilroy Little League All-Stars came back to win seven games in a row to take the District 39 Championship for the first time in many years.
Gilroy had to beat Santa Cruz American twice because of an early loss. In the first game on Tuesday, Gilroy was down 0-10 going into the fourth inning. Gilroy scored eight runs in the forth and six runs in the fifth to win 14-10.
On Wednesday night, Gilroy won the championship 6-5. Gilroy scored a fast three runs in the first and then were silenced in the second.
They weren’t silenced for long as they scored another two runs in the third inning on Steven Reinarts in the park two-run home run. Their final run came in the fifth inning on a double by Daniel Valdez and a single by Jacob Brendel.
Their one run lead was saved on two key plays made. Rafeal Garcia snagged a ball at shortstop getting the second out and Matt Jackson made a play his knees, snagging the ball in front of home plate to get the last out at first.
After a tuff 5-4 lost to Almaden, the Gilroy All-Stars were able to stay alive in the tournament with a 8-0 win against Milpitas North.
Pitchers Michael Hartmanm Kyle Stannard and Matt Jackson pitched a good game.
Daniel Valdez started Gilroy off with a single in the third. Arron Cimino was able to load the bases for Rafeal Garcia, who came up and hit a three-run double.
Eric Vegas also knocked in a double. Gilroy scored four runs in the fourth.
