Garlic mania
“Hi Red Phone. I just wanted to call and comment about the Dispatch’s early coverage of the Garlic Festival. Every year, you really take Gilroy’s main event and make it all that much more special. This morning’s paper (Friday) was fantastic, with great photos throughout. I especially enjoyed the article by Betsy Avelar and how she’s trying out for the Garlic Idol competition. I’m really looking forward to the next few days when the Dispatch always bumps its coverage up a notch. And I’m looking so forward to getting out to the festival and enjoying all the people and garlic food and such. Thanks so much for the great coverage of our great city’s main event.”
– “Nice job on the Garlic Fest stories. Really enjoy the little insert you guys put out every time too with all the schedules and entertainment event and cooking demonstrations. Good job. Thank you.”
– “Hi there, we’re from out of town and staying at a friend’s home so that we can enjoy the Gilroy Garlic Festival. We come every year and I saw a couple copies of the Dispatch at their house and this column and thought I’d call in and say what a wonderful event Gilroy puts on every year. It truly is a wonderful festival and worth the drive and the cost of gas to make the trip. Thank you Gilroy for having the Garlic Festival.”
Red Phone:

Where food is cooked at its very best.

To tickle your taste buds and your stomach satisfy.

Stay for Shaboom and watch the Idol show,
Each year the entertainment list continues to grow.
So if you’re bored stiff and have time to kill,
Take a drive and spend some time at Christmas Hill.

It will lead you to Gilroy’s festival of the stinkin’ rose.
No Flatts at fest
“I’m just asking for a schedule for the Garlic Festival. I thought it would be in today’s paper, which it is not. I need to know when Rascal Flatts will be appearing because my son is going to take his little niece to see the program. Thank you.”
Red Phone:
It hates to disappoint, but the country band Rascal Flatts is not appearing at this year’s Garlic Festival. Before the band became a hit, it appeared at the annual festival in 2000. The story you likely saw, back on June 1, was about how the Garlic Festival Entertainment Committee was searching for the next up-and-coming band, like it found six years ago in Rascal Flatts.
