DEAR Editor:
For Mr. McCormack and others concerned about the use of modern
day language and it’s forgotten origins, another historical
perspective might suffice.

“I pledge allegiance to my flag and to the Republic for which it stands – one nation indivisible – with liberty and justice for all.”
The socialist Baptist minister, Francis Bellamy, who wrote this quite ordinary sentence, had respect for the secular, godless U.S. Constitution that our remarkable deistic forefathers put together. As a member of the Nationalist movement, he preached about the evils of capitalism, and shared publicly the benefits of nationalizing American industry via socialism. He was kicked out of his ministry.
Minister Bellamy is probably smirking in his grave that a capitalist, “Christian-based,” god-fearing America recites his socialist-based, godless, secularly-derived pledge on a daily basis.
