A freshman who wrestles like anything but a ninth grader, Delgado won the 103-pound weight class at the rugged Five Counties Invitational in Fountain Valley.

“This is the tournament you usually get an idea where you stand because all the top teams in the state are there,” Gilroy coach Armando Gonzales says.

The Mustangs, however, did not get that opportunity because 171-pound junior Hunter Collins was rested with a minor injury. Nevertheless, Delgado gave a good accounting of himself as the No. 1 seed, capturing another tournament on the heels of winning the previous weekend at the Doc Buchanan Invitational.

After posting four wins, including upending No. 4 seed A.J. Valles of Selma in the semifinals, Delgado shut out unseeded Britain Longmire of Cimarron-Memorial in Las Vegas, 6-0.

Martin Gonzales, the No. 5 seed at 119, finished sixth. After winning three times, Gonzales was defeated by top-seeded Nikko Triggas of Campolindo in the semifinals. Triggas went on to capture the weight class.

Andres Barragan, the No. 5 seed at 189, finished seventh. Barragan won his first match before being defeated by Sean Hill of Poway, who finished fourth. Barragan won three times in the consolation rounds before being beaten by No. 4 seed Ryan Cummings of Morro Bay, who finished fifth.

Rudy Maldonado won his first match at 125 before losing to Naveed Bagheri of Los Gatos, who finished fourth. Vincent Aboytes won his first-round match at 135 before losing to No. 1 seed Jerrin Miller of Natomas. Austin Gubrud won his first-round match at 145. Ethan Ogle won his first match at 160 and won a consolation match.

How tough is the 171-pound weight class where Collins campaigns? Ponderosa’s Justin Danz, who handed Collins his only defeat this year, pinned two-time state champion Louis Bland with one second remaining in the second period of the final.

Gilroy finished 11th overall with 80 points but just two points behind ninth-place Santa Fe. Poway was a runaway winner with 226 points, placing nine wrestlers in the top 8. Vacaville was second with 166.5 and Buchanan was third at 147.
