Need a break
“Sunrise Park is new and is a wonderful recreation area for young and old. There is a large area for sports such as soccer and play spots for the young children, as well as tennis courts and water fountains and shrubs and grass. It’s a real pleasure to go there. The only drawback is the lack of any sort of a bathroom – not even a Porta-Potty. It remains a nice addition to our town, just don’t drink a lot of coffee before you go over there!”
Red Phone:
Sunrise Park will eventually have a community building with restrooms, but don’t hold your breath – or anything else – waiting for it.
Officials have not set a construction date and have not earmarked any funds for the project, which will jockey for money against dozens of others in coming years.
While community parks such as Christmas Hill have bathrooms, neighborhood parks such as Sunrise Park generally do not have such facilities, according to Parks and Facilities Manager Bill Headley. Construction costs eat up roughly a quarter of funding available for neighborhood parks, and officials prefer to spend that money on swings, ball fields and other amenities.
“Most neighborhood parks are not designed with bathrooms because the expectation is that they’re within walking distance of homes,” Headley said. Still, he acknowledged that such a policy “doesn’t help the youngster learning about lead time.”
Let’s help out
“I’m calling in regards to Glen View School. They have a new multipurpose room. They have a music teacher, but they have no piano. I think the community service organizations or some charitable group should put $1,000 or so together and buy Glen View School a piano so the students and the music instructor can benefit from the new facility. I hope the children can learn and have a greater appreciation of music. Thank you very much.”
Red Phone:
What a great idea, caller. The Red Phone’s more than happy to publish it and put your idea out there into the community. Should anyone have interest in helping out in this department, give the Red Phone a call.
Offense taken
“I resent something in the article that Matt King wrote about the Morgan Hill’s Trader Joe’s. I’ve been in this town 81 years and I feel it’s an insult in this article to say that Morgan Hill is more educated and wealthy. I can remember way back when that town was absolutely nothing. I resent the fact that they put that in the paper, about it being more educated. Definitely.”
– “A few of us ladies were discussing the article regarding the Trader Joe’s coming to Morgan Hill. We are offended with the statement made that Gilroy people are not educated or financially able to have a Trader Joe’s store. What a snobbish thing to say.”
Red Phone:
It was also a little taken aback by the comment. So your trusty Red Phone went to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Web site at www.census.gov to see what it could find out. And, good callers, you won’t like it found.
According to the most recent statistics (1999) from the site, Gilroy’s median household income stands at $62,135; Morgan Hill’s median household income is $81,958.
The percentage of Gilroy’s population that has graduated from high school, as of 2000 statistics, is 70.1; 86.8 percent of Morgan Hill’s population has a high school diploma.
And lastly, the percentage of Gilroy’s residents that have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher is 19.1; Morgan Hill’s population? 33.5 percent.
But what all this has to do with a grocery store, Red Phone’s not exactly sure. Take it for what it’s worth.
