Are You Gilroy’s Biggest Loser?

Gilroy – Gilroy Health and Fitness and Saint Louise Regional Hospital are sponsoring the “Biggest Loser” Gilroy Challenge. The 12-week program aims to inspire significant weight loss through nutritional programs and exercise. The contest begins Sept. 12 and runs through Dec. 5. Contestants will have regular physical fitness appointments, nutritional advice, a boot camp and biweekly public weigh-ins at the fitness center, 8540 Church St.

The program costs $1,950 per contestant, with a 24-contestant limit. In addition to continual fitness training, contestants have the chance to win prizes at each weigh-in and at the end of the competition. The more than $10,000 in prizes include paid vacations and computers. In addition, a portion of the profits, if any are realized, will go to Saint Louise Regional Hospital Foundation.

Perchlorate Group Meets Thursday

Find a Furry Friend at Pet Fair

Gilroy – Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter will hold a pet adoption fair from 11am to 4pm Saturday and Sunday at the Petco in Morgan Hill (corner of Tennant Avenue and Monterey Road). Stop by to find a new furry friend; make a donation to help cover spay/neuter, food, and litter expenses; find out how to become a foster parent or get more information on adopting barncats; or sign-up to volunteer for the shelter.

Habitat for Humanity BBQ

Gilroy – The Gilroy office of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage will host a BBQ Bash Thursday to benefit the Silicon Valley chapter of Habitat for Humanity.

The event will feature a barbecue food fare and raffle with proceeds going to the local Habitat organization. The event is being held at the office’s location at 7789 Wren Ave., beginning at noon. The price for admission is $10 for adults, which includes a tri-tip/chicken lunch, and $5 for kids younger than 13, which includes a hot dog lunch.

Gilroy – Do you know of an individual, business, or organization that goes “above and beyond” to make the community a better place? Have you been wishing there were some way to provide recognition? Nominations are now open for the Gavilan College 2007 Community Spirit Awards. Anyone may submit a nomination. Release Your Inner Writer

Gilroy – The Gilroy Writing Project features three upcoming events:

n 2pm, Sept. 15 – Louise Ure, whose debut mystery, “Forcing Amaryllis,” won the Shamus award for Best First Novel. Her next book, “The Fault Tree” comes out Jan. 8.

n 2pm, Oct. 20 – Linda Joy Myers, whose books “Don’t Call Me Mother: Breaking the Chain of Mother-Daughter Abandonment,” and “Becoming Whole: Writing Your Healing Story,” will help explore personal history and begin a spiritual autobiography.

n 2pm, Nov. 17 – Matilda Butler will offer tips on developing your personal memoir, then scrapbook your writing and photos into a beautiful family keepsake.

All GWP programs are free and designed for an adult audience.
