The Uvas Valley Division of the California Retired Teachers Association will present three local musicians in a program of varied offerings on Friday, March 18, beginning at 7:30pm in the sanctuary of the Gilroy United Methodist Church.
In the spotlight will be Hermann Schmalzried, performing not only on cornet, but also on the button box accordion, or handharmonika. A member of the Retired Teachers Association, Hermann taught music in both private and public schools. Schmalzreid will be accompanied for most of his cornet program by local pianist, Eunice Coates, also a Retired Teachers member. Repertoire for the program will include cornet solos composed by Herbert L. Clarke and John Hartmann.
While on the button box, Schmalzreid will perform music from the folk repertoire of Germany and Austria, much of it arranged by his mentor, Joe Smiel.
Also performing on the evening’s program will be Candace Fazzio, presenting a set of concert waltzes by several American composers. Fazzio directs Gilroy’s Monterey Street Music Academy, and performs her repertoire of Pan-American music throughout Northern California.
Fazzio and Schmalzreid will close the program with Leroy Anderson’s familiar “Trumpeter’s Lullaby.” The concert is presented for the benefit of the Retired Teachers’ scholarship fund. Although there is no charge for admission to the program, donations to the scholarship fund will be gratefully accepted.
