The annual Poppy Jasper International Film Festival wrapped up its weeklong celebration of film Wednesday with a tour of Hollister wineries, a final film screening and the closing ceremony and audience awards at the Granada Theater in Hollister.
PJIFF executive director Mattie Scariot said this year’s festival was truly magical.

“We welcomed filmmakers and audiences from around the globe, and the energy, creativity and sense of community were felt in every moment,” she said. “I’m incredibly proud of how the festival has grown—not just in size, but in record-breaking attendance, deeper conversations, and meaningful industry connections.
What moved her most was hearing how much filmmakers loved the variety and charm of the various venues, and how inspired they were by the way the different communities came together to support this festival.
“Each year we grow stronger, and this one felt like something truly special—I honestly didn’t want it to end,” she added. “Filmmakers left energized and eager to return with new work, and we can’t wait to get started on celebrating our 20th anniversary next year!”

The opening ceremony included a legacy award to the late Marty Cheek, who was instrumental in reviving the festival more than a decade ago. What started in Morgan Hill has grown to include events and showings in Gilroy, Hollister and San Juan Bautista as well.
Cheek’s unwavering support, dedication and belief in the power of storytelling helped shape the festival and strengthen our local communities, Scariot said.
“When I first took over (six years ago) he championed this festival like nobody else,” Scariot said. “Marty’s passion for uplifting voices made a profound difference, and his legacy will continue to inspire us. Though he is no longer with us, his spirit lives on in every story we share. We are forever grateful for his contributions and will honor his memory by continuing the work he so deeply believed in.”
Congratulations, Mattie. We’re already looking forward to next year’s festival!
